This date change is because WAEC is to conduct the May/June diet of its exams from August 17 to September 7. Also, NABTEB is to start 21 to October 15 while NECO will be from September 15 and end November 18.

This newly announced date by JAMB will enable candidates seeking admission on awaiting results to meet up with their respective institutions post-UTME and screening exercises.

Though dates have been announced about JAMB admissions, candidates may get clues on how schools are likely going to conduct post UTME and release admission list.

The Process Of Gaining Admission Through JAMB

The JAMB admission process into a tertiary institution is to write the examination and or purchase of direct entry form from the board.

For a candidate can be considered for screening, he/she must have been given provisional admission by JAMB. The JAMB admission checker portal is going to be opened soon for this process.

JAMB stated that the point system would be used for the admission process which would depend on the point tally of the candidate will be used. This is to means that JAMB’s provisional admission no longer makes much sense this year, your points tally will decide your faith.

The points will be evenly spread out between your O’level and JAMB results to provide a level playing field for all.

First, any candidate who submits only one result which contains his/her relevant subjects already has ten (10)points, the exam could be NECO, WAEC, GCE etc, but any candidate who has two sittings only gets two (2) points. So, this means that aspirants with only one result are at an advantage.

Candidates also have more chances of gaining admission with better grades in their O’level as follows:

A – 6 marks,

B – 4 marks,

C – 3 marks.

Besides, the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scores also have implications during the admission process.

The range of scores and marks awarded to it are as follows:

180 – 200 (or 20 – 23 marks),

 200 – 250 (or 24 – 33 marks),

251 – 300 (or 34 – 43 marks),

300 – 400 (or 44 – 60 marks)

as well as five JAMB results per point added.

The board stated that a candidate with 180 – 185 gets 20 points, a candidate with 186 – 190 gets 21 points, stating further the point system for direct entry will be released soon just as fees will still be charged for screening which has replaced the post UTME.

JAMB Admission Process

Every applicant must monitor his admission status through CAPS in his or her JAMB profile dashboard.

Meaning Of JAMB CAPS.

CAPS means Central Admission Processing System. This system is devised by JAMB to monitor the admission progress of all candidates.

The primary purpose of this CAPS is to monitor the admission of candidates by JAMB so that schools don’t deprive them offer when you merit one.

A candidate is to accept or reject the admission offer if offered. As soon as you accept your offer, your admission letter is available for printing. Candidates are to follow guidelines to print admission letter.

Many candidates complained of the inability to print admission letters of the previous session. It must be noted that any admission not accepted on CAPS before the closure of admission for the year is an incomplete exercise which cannot be reversed. Institutions are reminded of the process and procedure for deletion and rejection.

To get admission, JAMB must offer a candidate an admission before such candidates qualify for screening in the institution he or she has been provisionally admitted. This means that institutions can only screen candidates sent to them by JAMB as having been provisionally admitted in such institution.

JAMB provisional admission is now a means to an end and not an end itself. The board may offer a candidate a provisional admission and such candidate will still be denied admission by his/her institution because he or she scored below the cut-off point for his/her course in that particular institution.

That a candidate needs to check and accept admission on the JAMB portal through CAPS, He or She must as well check your school's portal for the offer of admission too. Note the following:

It is on the school portal you will accept the admission and make payment for your acceptance.

It is on the school portal you will do your fresher registration.

It is on the school portal you will check for further details on your admission.

For instance, you may be given provisional admission to study MBBS in UNIBEN by JAMB having obtained a UTME score of 260. If your institution’s cut-off point for medicine is 95 points and you scored below that number of points after the screening, you might likely be denied admission.

Factors like catchment area and ELDS (Educationally Less Developed States) will still be considered in determining the number of candidates admitted. It can be categorised as follows:

Admission by merit is 45%,

Catchment area 35%,

Educationally Less Developed (ELDS) 20%.

The issue of Science to Art ratio will still be in place. For universities, Science to Art ratio will be 60:40, Polytechnics 70:30. However, for specialized institutions (Technology, Science Agriculture etc) it will be 100% related to their speciality. Also, 90% of admission will go to UTME candidates while 10% will go to Direct Entry candidates.

Institutions admission screening processes will now be based on a point system.

The Point System

The first on the point system is the O’level grading. Candidates who have only one O-level result will stand a better chance of gaining admission than candidates with 2 results. One 0’level result gets 10marks/points while candidates with two O’level results gets 3 marks/points.

Similarly, each grade will now have its equivalent points/marks in this manner; A=6 marks, B=4 marks, C=3 marks which mean the

having better grades in your O’level result gives you a better chance of securing admission.

Who Is Qualified For Admission

Here is how the 2020/2021 Admission Screening will be calculated;

Step 1 – Number of sittings for O’Level

1) One Sitting = 10 marks

2) Two Sittings = 3marks

Step 2 – O’Level Result Grading from 5 subjects

A (A1) = 6marks

B (B2, B3) = 4marks

C (C4, C5, C6) = 3marks

Step 3 – JAMB UTME Score Grades.

                                                                            Conclusion

I believe as a student seeking for admission into any Higher Institution in Nigeria, the above guidelines and processes enumerated above will be of tremendous help.If the processes are followed, your admission will be sure.
